The stump gets its own line on the quote rather than hiding inside the felling price. A fair number of owners want the tree gone and are quite happy for the stump to stay where it is.

West of the road, in sand, the machine has an easy time of it. Sand falls away from the cutting wheel instead of resisting it, nothing clays up, and stump grinding and removal is over quickly.
East of the road, on silt loam and on a grade, stump grinding and removal is slower. The soil holds together, the machine has to be set up rather than simply driven into position, and on anything past about twelve per cent the approach matters as much as the stump does.
Both are perfectly ordinary stump grinding and removal. They are just not the same price, and the quote says which one yours is.

For turf, go 150 to 200 mm under the surface. Grass roots stay near the top, so it is grindings, then soil, then seed, and done.
For a border, go deep enough that a root ball genuinely fits, rather than dressing compacted grindings with an inch of topsoil.
Paving, a shed base or a fence line wants more again, and usually means following the surface roots out sideways as well.
Just want the mower to stop catching it? Less depth costs less, and it will be quoted that way if you say so.
In sand the chip and soil mixture settles evenly and drains away afterwards.
On the silt loam it does not. The ground around the hole drains slowly too, so a hollow that forms as the grindings settle will hold water rather than shed it — and on a slope it will channel that water somewhere. Both are worth knowing before you decide how deep to go.
Expect to top up the backfill once during the first year either way.
The County's note about the Nature Park perimeter applies here as much as anywhere: this ground does not produce a canopy by itself.
Ground-out chip holds almost no water and the sand beneath it holds not much more, so anything planted in spring is a two-summer watering commitment. Autumn planting is easier on everybody.
And do not plant into fresh grindings. As the grindings break down they strip nitrogen from the soil around them, and anything planted there stands still for a couple of years.
Where the services run. Grinding wheels go through pipe and cable without slowing down, and what is buried is not always where a drawing puts it.
How we get in. There is a small machine and a large one. The small one goes through a garden gate. The large one has to come round the side, and it eats a broad stump in a fraction of the time. On a slope, access decides which one comes.
Wire or stone in it. Stumps on old property lines have frequently swallowed a fence strand, and hitting one writes off the teeth and finishes the day.
