A trunk that divides into two or three stems at more or less one point, with bark trapped in the division where timber ought to be.
Bark cannot bond. What you are looking at is not really a fork at all. It is two stems leaning together over a seam of dead bark, and the seam lengthens as the stems get heavier. One windy night it opens.
Combine that defect with a large tree on a valley slope and you have the classic case of half a crown ending up on a driveway, because the weight was already pointing that way.
Cable is flexible, and that is the point of it. It is installed well up the stems, roughly two-thirds of the distance from the fork out to the ends, where it caps how far they can spread and shaves the extremes off the loading.
Bracing is the rigid half of tree cabling and bracing — a threaded rod driven straight through the fork, used where a split is underway and wants clamping rather than limiting.
Neither heals anything. Tree cabling and bracing exists to extend a good tree's working life, and both should be fitted alongside a crown reduction, so the steel is not asked to carry weight that could simply have been removed.
Put tree cabling and bracing on a tree that is rotting at the base and you have done worse than nothing, because now somebody believes the tree has been made safe.
Is the tree worth it — mature, sound, giving shade that would be missed, not something ten years of growth replaces?
Is the timber sound on both flanks of the fork, so there is something to bolt into?
Is there scope to lighten the crown on the same visit? Fitting cable and leaving the weight is doing half of it.
Will it be inspected? Hardware nobody revisits is not a support system.
Any one of those answered no and the money belongs elsewhere, and you will be told so.
You are taking on an obligation rather than buying a product. The steel degrades, and a tree that keeps growing wraps itself around an anchor and eventually conceals it.
Ignore an installation for fifteen years and it stops being a support system; it becomes metal grown over by wood. A failure then is worse than never having fitted anything, because the crown above it was built in the belief that the cable was doing its job.
Which is why an interval for re-inspection is part of every installation, and is quoted to you up front. There is a truck through Burtch and Newport most weeks anyway, so a return inspection does not mean a dedicated trip.
Where a fork has already parted any distance, cable on its own has generally missed its moment — though a rod through the split with cable set above it does sometimes still take the load.
Rot at the base rules out hardware entirely.
A young tree with a poor fork gets the fork corrected instead — cheaper, and permanent.
