Every leaf is a demand on the roots, and around here the roots are either working dry sand or holding a tree up on a grade.
So tree trimming and pruning is a question of how much before it is a question of shape. Remove a measured tenth or so and the tree has less to hold up and less to feed. Take forty and it spends three summers replacing it with growth that is weaker than what was removed.

A tree grown on a twelve to twenty per cent grade is not symmetrical and should not be pruned as though it were.
The downhill side carries more crown, the uphill roots are doing more of the anchoring, and taking an even percentage off all round can leave the tree worse balanced than it started. Reduction on a slope-grown tree is weighted, deliberately, toward the side that is overhanging.
None of that is visible from a photograph, which is one of several reasons nothing here is priced from one.
Good oaks stand all over this end of the county, and oak wilt is loose in Ontario. That answers the timing question before anybody raises it.
Oaks are cut with the leaves off. Spring and summer wounds attract the beetles that spread it. A cut made with the leaves off offers them nothing to land on.
An oak damaged in a July storm is still attended to — a hanger above a driveway is not going to hold on until the leaves drop. That is damage control, not planned work.
Sealing happens from a collar of tissue where the branch meets the stem. Outside it, the tree closes; through it, the tree cannot.
On a dry site or a stressed slope tree, that closing happens slowly, so a poor cut stays open longer and stays open where decay fungi can find it.
